Parts of the Chesapeake Bay were aglow over the weekend, as this video taken near Tangier on Sunday night shows. The Virginia Insitute of Marine Science says this bioluminescence in the water was likely caused by an algae known as Alexandrium monilatum, which the insitiute says has been blooming in the Bay for several weeks. The algae produces a blue-green glow when the water is disturbed, but it also can be harmful to aquatic life. Luckily, it has not been linked to harmful effects on humans, according to VIMS. Researchers are currently monitoring the blooms and tracking their distribution, but they do occur most commonly in the late summer.
