Algae are a diverse group of photosynthetic organisms that range from microscopic unicellular microalgae to large multicellular seaweeds. National Geographic Science highlights diatoms as single-celled algae encased in silica, while Anwesha Raj describes algae as simple plant-like organisms that make their own food through photosynthesis and produce oxygen in water. Most algae are aquatic and serve as primary producers in ecosystems, forming the base of the aquatic food chain.
Algae are classified as thallophytes, a group of non-mobile organisms without roots, stems, or vascular tissue. The algae found in snow are specifically called cryophytes, with Chlamydomonas nivalis responsible for red snow in arctic regions. They lack true plant structures and include types like green algae Chlorophyta, which are used in medicine, food, and cosmetics for their antibacterial properties.
Algae also have significant economic and ecological importance, from bioremediation to biofuels and carbon sequestration. Some species form symbiotic relationships, such as zoochlorella living inside Paramecium bursaria. Despite centuries of study, the term "algae" has no strict taxonomic meaning but refers to organisms sharing oxygenic photosynthesis and chlorophyll as a main pigment.
