READY TO SAVE THIS! 📌💽 1. Breakfast - should be largely carbohydrate focused. Easy, simple carbs easily digested, 2-4hours before the race. You don’t want to over eat. Can always top up with a banana, gel or sports drink 15 min before the race 2. Pacing - ideally you want a negative split. Don’t go out too fast! Adrenaline will be there but you need to take control. You want to run the second half faster than the first. This is a useful tactic to prevent going out too fast. This will burn through your energy faster making life harder…trust me - slay in your lane and ignore everyone else! 3. Hydration - ideally you’re looking for clear, straw coloured urine on the morning of the race. In a half marathon it’s ok to drink to thirst. The night before and the morning of the race I will tend to have a glass of water with electrolytes- I use the ones from @fourfiveuk or @liquidiv.uk as they’re delicious and sit will with my stomach - try what works for you. Drinking too much pure water may actually deplete your bodies sodium and negatively impact performance. 4. Intra race fuelling - gels. It amazes me that so many people have never heard of or tried them. My favourites are the @myprotein @high5sportsnutrition @scienceinsport gels, they are water based and taste yum, not too sweet and easy to open and consume - only 25g per gel so you may need a few throughout as recommendations are around 60g carbs/hour (that’s 3 gels). Some have caffeine, some have electrolytes - I personally do not like to use those (💩 if you know what I mean 🫣) 5. Tapering - this is the idea of bringing down the volume and intensity of your training in the immediate 10-14 days before your race to allow for maximum recovery of your body and your training adaptations to occur. Remember rest and recovery is part of your training - take advantage of it here! And most importantly - DON’T TRY ANYTHING NEW Any other classic mistakes I’ve missed here!??
