About Leg Casting
Leg casting involves applying a rigid dressing to immobilize the lower limb for fractures or deformities. A short leg cast extends from below the knee to the base of the toes, while a long leg cast runs from the upper thigh to the toes. For clubfoot treatment, the Ponseti Method uses serial long-leg casts changed every 3 to 4 days to gradually reposition the foot.
Total contact casting is used for diabetic foot ulcers to redistribute weight from the foot to the leg, reducing pressure and promoting healing. Positioning varies by patient mobility, with the knee often flexed for comfort during long leg cast application. Fiberglass casts dry faster than plaster and allow early weight bearing.
