@hasolo_mafi Absolutely disgusting. This is how low this govt have gone. Literally starving people because their system think’s food isn’t an essential need. 8,000+ families across the motu over the last 6 years, starved, declined by MSD. And then made worse because of this current govts continued punitive measures. Punishing the poor has been this govts welfare plan. They have cut benefit increases. Introduced punitive sanctions, blocked those sanctioned from accessing hardship grants and housing, moved the goal post to qualify for emergency housing, increased what social housing tenants need to pay, tied 18 and 19 year olds to the income of their parents. Now the systems are failing. We’ve already seen people have their benefits suspended because of errors in the Government’s new review system. We’ve seen people have their Winter Energy Payment stopped because of a Government error. Money that for many whānau means groceries, turning the lights on or a warm home. And now thousands of people asking for help to buy food have been told that food isn’t an essential need. The safety net of the most vulnerable has been deliberating removed from beneath them. Some families are in free fall because this govt is more worried about their spreadsheets in the green rather than supporting those who need it most. I feel for our kids the most. The 77,000 tamariki Māori living in material hardship. Living in households unable to put kai on the table, living in cold damp housing, without warm clothes and shoes. When you grow up in poverty, your pathway in life becomes harder in almost every single turn. And that is what this govt is creating. When a govt deliberately reduces people’s income, makes emergency assistance harder to access, increases housing costs and removes support when people fall through the cracks - it is creating the conditions that push people towards homelessness. I will push for that safety net to immediately be reinstated following the ousting of this govt. It is simply unacceptable that our families are being punished for struggling. That our kids are going without. So we must vote. We must vote for our tamariki who cannot.
