🦶❤️ Did you know? Those tiny hairs growing on your toes may actually be a reassuring sign of healthy circulation... It might sound surprising, but doctors often look at the feet when assessing blood flow to the legs. Hair follicles require a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients, so healthy circulation helps them continue producing hair. When blood flow to the feet becomes severely reduced—as can happen in peripheral artery disease (PAD)—one possible sign is the gradual loss of hair on the toes, feet, and lower legs. This happens because narrowed arteries may not deliver enough oxygen to support normal hair growth. That’s why having hair on your toes can simply be a sign that the small blood vessels supplying your feet are functioning normally. However, it’s important not to overinterpret it. Toe hair alone doesn’t prove that your heart is “pumping perfectly” or guarantee excellent cardiovascular health. Hair growth is also influenced by genetics, age, hormones, and sex, so some perfectly healthy people naturally have very little toe hair. Doctors diagnose circulation problems using a combination of symptoms, physical examination, pulse checks, and tests such as the ankle-brachial index (ABI)—not toe hair alone. 💡 Interesting fact: One of the earliest warning signs of poor circulation isn’t always pain—it can be cool feet, slow-healing wounds, weak foot pulses, shiny skin, or loss of hair on the lower legs and toes. Paying attention to these changes can help detect circulation problems early.
