SIX YEARS OF A SOLDIER'S SALARY: An amateur archaeologist using a metal detector in western Germany made the discovery of a lifetime when he stumbled upon 934 Roman silver denarii near Cologne. Weighing 6.8 pounds, the treasure dates back to the reign of Emperor Hadrian in the second century A.D. and represents the largest find of its kind in the region. Experts estimate that amassing such a fortune would have taken an ordinary Roman soldier about six years of total savings. The historic coin hoard is now officially on display at the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn.
