Released in 2001 as Celia Cruz’s 59th album, La Negra Tiene Tumbao brought salsa into new territory, blending traditional sounds with reggae and hip-hop influences. The title track became one of Celia Cruz’s signature songs, while the album reached No. 5 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart and No. 2 on the Top Tropical Albums chart. The album earned her four nominations that night, including Album of the Year and Best Salsa Album, while the title track was nominated for Record of the Year and Best Music Video. Five months later, she won the Grammy for Best Salsa Album at the 2003 Grammys. Celebrating Celia Cruz and her legacy this Hispanic Heritage Month.
