Under the strict guidance of his father, Joe Jackson, Michael spent much of his childhood focused on rehearsals, performances, and the relentless demands of becoming a professional entertainer. As the group’s young frontman, Michael became a star while he was still a child. But that extraordinary success also came with a sense of isolation. Surrounded by audiences, managers, and industry professionals, he had far less opportunity to experience an ordinary childhood alongside other children his age. The loss of that childhood became an important part of the way Michael later understood himself. His fascination with toys, amusement parks, fantasy, and the creation of Neverland reflected his longstanding connection to childhood and imagination. As Michael Jackson once said: “I totally relate to Peter Pan, the boy who refused to grow up. I am Peter Pan in my heart.”
