At best it hears uncertainty. At worst it hears incompetence. You’ve done the work, you know your stuff, and then you hand your point over wrapped in a “sorry” that tells everyone to take you less seriously. I’ve been that person. And it cost me. It turned me into a pushover with a boss who changed my schedule on a whim… and colleagues who took my ideas and got the credit, simply because they said them without the hedging. I got stuck working back-to-back opposite shifts, 12-day weeks, and the fluffy assignments while someone else got the lead story. All because I couldn’t say what I meant without softening it first. I could write examples of hedging all day. But you’re not going to memorize a list, and you shouldn’t have to. There’s one move underneath all of them, and once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
