Promoting their new album In Utero, Nirvana delivered raw, high-energy performances, while a charismatic Barkley appeared in memorable sketches like Al Franken’s “Stuart Smalley” and went one-on-one with Barney the Dinosaur. Beyond the broadcast, the episode is legendary for its surreal behind-the-scenes moments and promotional clips; Barkley famously filmed a promo jokingly telling his mother that Nirvana was her “favorite band” to the hilariously bewildered reactions of Cobain and Dave Grohl.
