Peter Cullen did not simply give Optimus Prime a powerful voice. He gave him a sense of humanity. When Cullen auditioned for the original Transformers series in 1984, he drew inspiration from his older brother Larry, a Vietnam veteran and former Marine captain. Larry told him to play Optimus as a real hero, someone strong enough to be gentle. That idea became the foundation of one of animation’s most iconic voices. Cullen went on to voice Optimus across decades of Transformers history, from the original animated series to Michael Bay’s live action films and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023. He also gave audiences Eeyore, voiced KARR in Knight Rider, and created the distinctive clicking sounds of the Predator. After his passing on August 26, 2026, at 85, his legacy remains inseparable from the character he helped define.
