Rock Music@rockmusicamerica Released as System of a Down’s first single in 1998, “Sugar” was one of the songs that introduced SOAD’s completely unpredictable sound to a much wider audience. 🤯 It jumps between heavy metal riffs, punk energy, frantic vocals and sudden changes without ever sounding like it’s trying to follow the rules. This is early System of a Down at its most chaotic. And the lyrics are just as wild. Serj Tankian’s vocals bounce between rapid, almost spoken passages, strange imagery and full blown screams. He later described the vocals as intentionally all over the place and said that, beyond being an angsty “fuck you” type of song, he didn’t really have one specific explanation for what it was about. That’s part of what makes “Sugar” so interesting. You can interpret the lyrics through themes of anger, alienation, drugs, media and society, but trying to force every line into one specific meaning misses the point. The song was released as the first single from System of a Down’s debut album and helped put the Armenian American metal band on the map. It became one of their defining early songs and helped lead to bigger opportunities, including Ozzfest and tours with bands such as Slayer. And then there’s the music video. It’s just as chaotic as the song, mixing the band performing in front of an American flag with disturbing historical and political imagery, including war footage, military imagery and references to the Holocaust and nuclear testing. This is 1990s System of a Down.
