Nevermind FM@nevermindfm In 1963, 17 year old Lesley Gore became an international star with “It’s My Party.” Produced by a young Quincy Jones, the song tells the story of a girl whose birthday party turns into heartbreak when her boyfriend Johnny arrives with another girl. The song itself was inspired by a real incident involving songwriter Seymour Gottlieb’s teenage daughter and her 16th birthday party. Gore’s version quickly became a massive hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. But Lesley Gore was far more than the voice behind a teenage heartbreak song. Later that same year, she released “You Don’t Own Me”, an iconic song about female independence that became one of the defining feminist anthems of the 1960s. Throughout her career, Gore continued recording, songwriting and acting, even earning an Academy Award nomination for “Out Here on My Own” from Fame.
