🎸 Rock History 🎸@rockhiistory Black Sabbath was formed in Birmingham in 1968 by Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Geezer Butler, and Ozzy Osbourne. In 1969, they adopted their final name and became known for their occult-themed lyrics and lower-tuned guitars. Their first three albums (Black Sabbath, Paranoid, and Master of Reality) laid the foundation for heavy metal and were huge commercial successes. In the years that followed, they explored more experimental and progressive sounds. With over 70 million albums sold as of 2013, they are considered one of the most important metal bands in history. They are part of the so-called “holy trinity” of British hard rock alongside Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, and have received numerous accolades, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
