I had a $612 dinner bill, and suddenly I’m “supposed” to leave over $120 just because the total was higher? Same plates carried, same drinks refilled, same amount of time at the table—but somehow the menu prices decide the server’s pay? I left $100 That’s still real money for a couple hours of service. But the mood shifted immediately, like I’d broken some unspoken law. Then the manager came over talking about “industry standards,” as if that settles the whole debate. Since when does a more expensive meal automatically mean more effort? If I order a $50 entrée instead of a $20 one, does the plate suddenly weigh more? I do tip for good service. But I don’t think a tip should automatically become a percentage-based surcharge just because the restaurant charges more. @dclark_2 Restaurants should pay their workers more money. Customers shouldn’t be obligated to pay them just for the restaurant to profit off cheap wages.
@charles44palmer Its funny that there is all this arguing about tips and percentages because the more you fight it the less people will tip and eventually get tired of it and stop tipping all together and the great thing is if i get tired of hearing relentless complaining about tipping ill just stop and you wont know your not getting a penny until the end of my meal and all that hard work will be for nothing except to buy myself a $50 cigar on my way home to enjoy while you bitch about why you didnt get a fat tip heheheheh

@reuben_iii The server pays taxes on the total of the bill - as a proxy for paying taxes on the tips. That’s why.

@michaelgwallace In the past, not recently, I would leave just 1 penny as a tip. This told the waiter or waitress that they did a terrible job with the orders, drinks, plus whatever else. This was common to do back in the 1980's 1990's. Now, no matter how they serve you, they expect to be paid and even the restaurant now put a service fee to make sure they get the extra money no matter how many are in your party!

@xavier9507933 This is the reason why certain restaurants act funny… they think every customer is rich. So if you’re not rich…. Poor service.

@medichuey I’ve started to do the same. A tip is a gesture of a well done service. I understand they make a living off of it, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to make more in a hour waiting tables than I do.
