On a normal day, getting from Los Angeles to Las Vegas takes about 4 to 4.5 hours. With open highways and light traffic, it’s a straightforward drive through the Mojave Desert. But timing is everything. Leave on a Friday afternoon bound for Vegas or head back to LA on Sunday, and Interstate 15 can quickly become clogged with traffic, stretching the trip into an exhausting 8- to 10-hour journey. The worst backups usually develop near Primm at the Nevada–California border. This notorious bottleneck traps thousands of vehicles in what’s known as the “Mojave crawl,” where traffic inches along for miles with little chance to recover. As traffic builds, steep grades through Cajon Pass, unexpected accidents, and the lack of alternate routes only make the delays harder to escape. If you’re planning the drive, leaving before dawn or later in the evening gives you the best chance of avoiding the worst congestion.
