Kobe obsessed over micro-details: jab steps with the dominant foot, stepping out on the catch without a dribble, splitting defenders with that right-foot plant then push-off left, and mastering the mid-post fadeaway with Hakeem-style pivots. Mike Procopio, Kobe’s former video coach, said if you watch the best in the world, they keep the dominant foot free and lock the non-dominant foot down - Kobe would literally say “show me the film” if anyone disputed it. He treated footwork like dance: purposeful, precise, and foundational to everything. That’s why today’s players like Jaylen Brown still study Kobe film and take salsa or tap classes to copy that coordination. Brown said watching Kobe “cracked the code” for him after workouts with Dash Athletics, because Kobe was doing exactly what trainers were trying to teach. Most young players today aren’t raised on that diet. The mathematical revolution rewards floor-spacing, catch-and-shoot 3s, and rim attacks over mid-range footwork, so individuality and ball-dominance are being stamped out at lower levels. Joel Embiid is one of the few 7-footers who looks like “Mamba at center,” blending fadeaways and counters that Kobe made famous. But for many guards and wings, the shift to 5-out offenses and early shot-clock 3s means fewer reps in the pinch post or elbow iso where Kobe lived. As one piece put it, the new orthodoxy “will stamp out future Kobes” because it de-emphasizes the mid-range craft Kobe perfected. The league still has footwork guys - Luka, Booker, Tatum all have Kobe clips in their film study - but the average rookie’s first instinct isn’t to work from the triple-threat and win with a jab like Kobe did against Michael Cooper in that legendary 1996 pre-draft workout. Cooper said Kobe’s footwork was already elite at 17, and that fearlessness plus technique is rarer now. #nba
