Rideau Chorale ends our Tenth Anniversary Season with Solace & Solidarity featuring Durufle's Requiem and Bernstein's Chichester Psalms. Duruflé’s Requiem serves to heal pain post-war, weaving ancient Gregorian chants into the lush, velvety harmonies of French Impressionism. By omitting the Dies Irae (Day of Wrath), he shifts the focus from divine judgment to human consolation, replacing fear with a meditative, ethereal vision of peace. Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms is a vibrant, "theatrical" sacred work that bridges traditions by setting Hebrew texts to jazz-influenced rhythms. Repurposing music originally intended for West Side Story, the piece features a Broadway-esque energy and a sense of rhythmic joy, featuring the pure sound of a boy soprano soloist.
