A single large ship can emit as much air pollution as millions of cars in one day, especially for sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and fine particles (PM2.5). Per passenger, cruises often produce more CO₂ than flying the same distance because the ship functions like a floating city, running hotels, restaurants, pools, and entertainment 24/7. The cruise industry accounts for about 3% of global shipping CO₂ emissions and roughly 0.1% of total global CO₂, but its impact is concentrated in port cities and fragile coastal ecosystems. One passenger on a cruise can be responsible for around 400+ kg of CO₂ per day. A typical large cruise ship produces each week: • ~200,000 gallons of sewage • ~1 million gallons of greywater • ~8 tons of solid waste
