@jeffreyraetzke I am not being critical and it was a nice try but it's a little misleading. Your coal, Gas, Wind, Water, Solar and Nuclear are raw forms of energy. What a power plant does is change the raw energy into a usable form of energy. Imagine if you put a tea kettle on a stove, The heat from the burning gas turns the water in the kettle to steam. We use the steam to turn a wheel and the wheel turns a device called a generator. The generator changes the mechanical energy into electricity. Unfortunately, everytime energy changes form some is lost in the form of heat. There are Very few ways to store or warehouse electricity and they are very ineffective. So, Ercot doesn't store or warehouse anything. what they do is control the electricity distribution systems. Think water pipes, the energy travels through the transmission pipe from the power plants to the consumer. Again, there is some losses due to heat. Now, imagine if a water pipe breaks, at the break point all the water is discharging and after the break point the water pressure is zero or near zero causing an outage. The system is designed to protect itself and the power plants.
