About Xmas
Dan McClellan explains that Xmas is not a secular removal of Christ from Christmas, but an ancient religious abbreviation. The “X” comes from the Greek letter chi, which is the first letter of Χριστός or “Christos” in Greek. Early Christian scribes used chi as shorthand for Christ in manuscripts as early as the first centuries, with the compound “Xmas” appearing in English by 1551.
The word Christmas itself comes from “Christ’s Mass,” derived from Old English Cristes maesse. “Mass” refers to the Latin missa, a religious service commemorating Christ. The X in Xmas therefore represents the same meaning as Christ, keeping the religious reference intact rather than erasing it. This practice is called nomina sacra, a traditional Christian abbreviation system.
Despite this history, some view Xmas as informal or as a commercial shortening. Merriam-Webster notes that the misconception persists, though the Greek origin has been documented for centuries. Both terms refer to the December 25 celebration of Jesus Christ’s birth.
