About Wataru Initial D
Wataru Akiyama is a solo racer in Initial D who drives a supercharged Toyota Corolla Levin GT-APEX AE86, known as the Eight-Six Turbo. He first appears in Second Stage during an impromptu battle with Keisuke Takahashi on Mount Akagi, which ends in a tie when both cars skid to avoid another crash. Wataru later challenges Takumi Fujiwara to a five-lap race on Shomaru Pass, where Takumi wins after exploiting a mudslide to overtake.
He is the cousin of Nobuhiko Akiyama and a member of the Northern Saitama Alliance, facing Project D in Saitama. Wataru initially clashes with Takumi over the AE86’s engine but later helps him with a 4WD complex and joins in taking down impostors on Sadamine. His car features a TRD wing and 4A-GZE engine, distinguishing it from Takumi’s stock AE86.
Wataru’s rivalry with Keisuke continues in MF Ghost Season 3, where he challenges Keisuke again on the rain-soaked Maze Pass in Saitama. The matchup highlights Wataru’s refined throttle control against Keisuke’s turbo RX-7, reigniting fan interest in the AE86 versus RX-7 dynamic.
