Charlotte Gaisford shares a step by step approach for hanging wallpaper that starts with prepping the wall and marking a plumb line. The first drop should be cut with a few extra inches at the top and bottom for trimming, then aligned to a vertical guide line drawn with a spirit level. For prepasted wallpaper, activate the glue with a spray bottle and let it sit for a few minutes before smoothing it onto the wall from the center outwards to remove air bubbles.
Larger patterns often look best centered on a focal point like a fireplace or main wall, while small patterns can start near a corner and work around the room. For non-prepasted wallpaper, apply adhesive to the wall or paper with a roller, then press the panel in place and wipe excess paste with a damp sponge. Trimming should be done with a sharp utility knife and metal straight edge for clean cuts.
Peel and stick wallpaper requires a smooth, primed surface and is applied by slowly peeling the backing while pressing the panel to the wall. Air bubbles can be smoothed with a credit card or pricked with a pin if needed. A second lining paper layer, called cross lining, is sometimes used on older plaster walls to create a smoother base before the final decorative layer.
