About Varkalacliff
Varkala Cliff in Kerala is a 6.4 km red laterite formation along the Arabian Sea in Thiruvananthapuram district. It was added to UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites for India in September 2025 and is India’s 27th National Geological Monument. The cliff exposes Warkalli Formation layers from the Mio-Pliocene age, with fossils and natural springs that support local biodiversity and water supply.
The cliff is divided into North, South, and Edava sections, with the North Cliff being the main tourism hub lined with cafes, shops, and guesthouses. Papanasam Beach at its base is known for ritual bathing and therapeutic springs. Visitors often walk the cliffside promenade for panoramic sunset views and to experience Varkala’s laid-back culture.
Environmental concerns have grown due to unregulated tourism and coastal erosion. In 2024, a portion near Bali Mandapam was demolished after landslide risks, drawing criticism from conservationists. The National Green Tribunal has also called for reports on the site’s deterioration from the Geological Survey of India.
