New York Map Society defines Upstate New York as the region north of the New York City metropolitan area, though there is no official legal boundary. Many residents consider areas beyond Poughkeepsie as the start of Upstate, while some argue it should begin farther north.
The term is often used to distinguish the rest of the state from New York City and Long Island. Key Upstate cities include Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo, along with regions like the Finger Lakes and Adirondacks. The debate remains subjective, with locals in places like the Hudson Valley sometimes rejecting the "Upstate" label due to cultural and economic differences.
Cultural markers also shape the perception of Upstate, such as the presence of Stewart's Shops convenience stores, which many use as an informal boundary.
