The Mastering

Abbey Road defines mastering as the final stage of audio production, where a track is polished for consistent playback across devices and formats. Engineers use EQ, compression, limiting, and stereo enhancement to balance frequencies, optimize loudness, and prepare the audio for streaming, CD, or vinyl.

The process prepares the mix for distribution without fixing fundamental issues. A well-balanced mix is required beforehand, with adequate headroom around -8dB to -4dB to avoid distortion. Steinberg engineer Mat Leffler-Schulman describes it as revealing the music’s intent rather than changing it.

Modern workflows blend analog and digital tools, like routing a mix through a Yamaha MG16XU mixer before recording back into Logic Pro, while monitoring LUFS for streaming standards.
