UAE Team Emirates-XRG confirmed on September 5, 2026 that Tadej Pogačar ended his 2026 season after a serious crash on stage 8 of the Vuelta a España on August 29. He sustained a fractured left collarbone, a stable C7 cervical fracture, and a concussion, and underwent successful surgery in Barcelona on August 31. The decision was made to focus fully on recovery rather than defend his world and European road race titles.
The 27-year-old Slovenian had been leading the Vuelta when he fell. The crash also forced him to miss the World Championships in Montréal, the European Championships, and Il Lombardia, a race he had won for five straight years. UAE Team Emirates-XRG announced the same day that Pogačar extended his contract with the team through 2032.
Pogačar resumed indoor cycling in mid-September 2026 as part of a gradual rehabilitation process. His 2026 campaign is officially over, with the 2027 season now set as the target for his return to racing. No specific comeback date has been confirmed by the team.
