About Simone Simon
Simone Simon was a French film actress best known for her role in the horror classic Cat People and its sequel The Curse of the Cat People. Born Simone Thérèse Fernande Simon on April 23, 1911 in Marseille, France, she began her film career in 1931 after being discovered as a singer and model in Paris. She worked in both European and American cinema during the 1930s and 1940s, appearing in films like La Bête Humaine and The Devil and Daniel Webster.
Simon spent her early childhood in Madagascar before her family settled in Paris, where she initially trained as a fashion designer. Director Marc Allégret launched her acting career, and she gained prominence in France with Ladies Lake in 1934 before signing with 20th Century Fox in Hollywood. Despite challenges with English and limited singing roles, her performance as Irena in Cat People became her most enduring legacy.
She returned to France after World War II and continued acting, with later roles including La Ronde in 1950. Simon’s film appearances became infrequent after the 1950s, and she made her final appearance in 1973 before passing away in Paris on February 22, 2005 at age 93.
