About Silvered
Dale Chihuly pioneered the use of silvered glass in contemporary art, applying a reflective silver coating to glass surfaces for his large-scale sculptures. Silvering is the chemical process of coating a non-conductive substrate like glass with a reflective metal layer to create a mirror effect. In Chihuly’s work, this technique produced the distinctive green-silver chandelier seen during his Chihuly Over Venice project in Monterrey, Mexico in the mid-1990s.
Most household mirrors use back-silvering, where the reflective layer sits behind the glass for protection from scratches and corrosion. Precision optical mirrors often use front-silvering instead, placing the reflective layer on the surface to reduce distortion and achieve 90–95% reflectivity. A protective overcoat is usually added to prevent oxidation of the silver layer.
Beyond art, silvered materials are used in industry for conductivity and efficiency. Schlenk Metallfolien produces silvered copper foil connectors for solar modules that improve efficiency by up to 3% through reflective light redirection. Silver plating is also common in electronics for its excellent conductivity and adhesion properties.
