About Silentmovie
Mel Brooks's 1976 film Silent Movie is a satirical comedy that parodies early-20th-century silent cinema. It follows director Mel Funn as he attempts to make the first major silent feature in forty years to save a struggling studio. The film uses intertitles instead of spoken dialogue and features cameos from Burt Reynolds, Liza Minnelli, and Paul Newman.
The term silent film refers to movies from the 1890s to 1920s made without synchronized sound, relying on visual storytelling and live musical accompaniment. Pianists or orchestras would play scores during screenings, and intertitles conveyed key dialogue. Rutgers University Libraries maintains Silent Film Online, a collection of over 1,000 restored silent features from directors like Charlie Chaplin and Fritz Lang.
Silent cinema continues to be celebrated through modern restoration and screenings. MoMA The Museum of Modern Art highlighted the restoration of the original score for D.W. Griffith's Way Down East during Silent Movie Week in 2026. Theaters like New Beverly Cinema also hold Silent Movie Day events, screening 35mm classics starring Lon Chaney to preserve the era's heritage.
