About Salalah
Salalah is a coastal city in southern Oman, located in the Dhofar governorate and known for its summer monsoon called khareef. During June to September the Indian Ocean monsoon brings rain, mist and green mountains, making it a popular escape from Gulf heat with temperatures around 23°C.
The city has historic ties to the frankincense trade and was described by Marco Polo in the 13th century. Salalah is also the birthplace of former sultan Qaboos bin Said and became Oman’s first city in the UN ‘Making Cities Resilient 2030’ programme in 2026.
Visitors come for waterfalls, banana and coconut farms, beaches, and sites like Al Baleed Archaeological Park and the Museum of Frankincense Land. The Port of Salalah at Raysut handles trade and was briefly suspended after a recent drone incident.
