rome’s colosseum was closed to the public on September 23, 2026, after 22-year-old rope-access technician Andrea Moretti fell to his death while installing a new lighting system. The italian culture ministry confirmed the overnight accident occurred about 10 metres above the amphitheatre’s second tier during an overnight shift.
giorgia meloni expressed shock at the tragedy, calling it unacceptable for a 22-year-old to die at work. Authorities initially planned to close only the affected section before shutting the entire site once visitors inside had exited.
The closure marked a rare interruption for the first-century monument, which normally only closes on December 25 and January 1 aside from COVID lockdowns. The site attracts up to 20,000 visitors daily and drew 14.7 million in 2024.
