About Relaxers
A relaxer is a chemical treatment that permanently straightens tight curls by breaking down the hair’s protein bonds. It uses strong alkalis like sodium hydroxide or no-lye formulas such as calcium hydroxide to reshape coily or curly strands into straight hair. Results require touch-ups every 8 to 11 weeks as new growth comes in, and proper neutralization is needed to avoid damage.
A texturizer works similarly but loosens curls instead of fully straightening them, keeping some natural texture. A perm does the opposite, creating curls or waves by wrapping hair around rods and setting it with chemicals. All three permanently alter treated hair, so consultation and aftercare are important to prevent breakage.
