About Purple Beach
Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur, California is the most famous purple sand beach in the world. The purple color comes from manganese garnet particles eroded from nearby cliffs and washed down to the shore, mixing with regular quartz sand. The hue is most visible after rain or along streams, and appears in patches rather than covering the entire beach.
While Pfeiffer Beach is the best known, other purple sand beaches exist in the western Canadian Shield region and northern United States, including Plum Island in Massachusetts and sites in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada. The purple effect forms when dense garnet minerals settle on the sand after glacial erosion, creating colorful streaks along the coastline.
Pfeiffer Beach is also known for its Keyhole Rock arch, which aligns with the sunset between November and January. The beach is reached via Sycamore Canyon Road off Highway 1 and requires a short walk from the parking area.
