About Pitrupaksha
Pitru Paksha 2026 begins on Saturday, September 26 with Purnima Shraddha and ends on Saturday, October 10 with Sarva Pitru Amavasya. The 16-day period is dedicated to honouring ancestors through rituals like Shraddha, Tarpan, and Pind Daan. Families usually perform Shraddha on the tithi corresponding to an ancestor’s death, or on Sarva Pitru Amavasya if the exact date is unknown.
The fortnight is rooted in Hindu belief that ancestral spirits descend to Earth during this time to bless descendants. Devotees offer water mixed with sesame seeds and food to seek peace for departed souls and to resolve Pitru Rin, one of the three spiritual debts. Key auspicious timings like Kutup Muhurat from 11:48 am to 12:36 pm are observed for the rituals.
Astrologers also share remedies during Pitru Paksha, such as serving elders, feeding the hungry, and lighting a lamp in the south direction. Rohit Gore highlighted in a 2025 Instagram Reel that respecting parents and mentors aligns with the ninth house in Vedic astrology, which is associated with dharma and lineage. Sharad Navratri follows the period starting October 11.
