About Phi Mu Initiation
Phi Mu initiation follows a formal ritual for new members of the Phi Mu women's fraternity, which was founded at Wesleyan College in 1852. The ceremony marks the transition from new member to active sister and typically includes reciting the fraternity’s values, signing the chapter roll, and receiving the Phi Mu badge. Chapters often hold it after a period of new member education and require specific attire such as all-white clothing for initiates.
The event is private to members and alumni, with family and friends invited to separate public ceremonies like “Presents” held the following day. Dress codes for alumnae attending may include an all-white outfit and appropriate shoes as outlined in the ritual. Each chapter prepares in advance by practicing staging and wording to ensure the ceremony reflects Phi Mu’s traditions and history.
Phi Mu is part of the National Panhellenic Conference and has over 170 years of history with chapters across the United States. The initiation emphasizes sisterhood, scholarship, and service, aligning with the fraternity’s founding principle as a lover of learning. New members are also expected to follow chapter guidelines during initiation week, including no phones and formal conduct during the rituals.
