About Owls
Owls are nocturnal birds of prey in the order Strigiformes, with roughly 200 to 250 species found worldwide except Antarctica. They have large forward-facing eyes, sharp talons, hooked beaks, and specialized feathers that allow near-silent flight for hunting small mammals, insects, and other birds. Most species are solitary and active at night, relying on excellent hearing and vision to locate prey in low light.
Owls are divided into two families: the Strigidae, or true owls, and the Tytonidae, which includes barn owls. They inhabit nearly every environment from forests and deserts to Arctic tundra, with sizes ranging from 5 to 28 inches. Their fixed tube-shaped eyes cannot move, so owls rotate their heads up to 270 degrees to see around.
Owls play an important role in ecosystems by controlling rodent and insect populations, making them indicators of environmental health. Cultural depictions often link owls to wisdom or mystery due to their quiet flight and haunting calls.
