About Organicgarden

Organic Gardening focuses on growing plants without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, instead building healthy soil and working with natural ecosystems. The practice emphasizes composting, crop rotation, and using organic matter like mulch and manure to improve soil fertility while supporting biodiversity and reducing pollution. It promotes better-tasting, more nutritious produce and creates habitats for beneficial insects and wildlife.

The first step is assessing soil health through a soil test to check pH and nutrient levels, then adding compost or well-rotted manure to boost microbial activity. Kew Gardens and Garden Organic recommend starting small with raised beds or containers, choosing the right plants for the space, and using physical barriers or companion planting for natural pest control. Organic gardeners also avoid digging when possible to preserve soil structure and moisture.

Chef Ben Bayly demonstrates organic methods at his four-acre Patumahoe garden in South Auckland, using permaculture and seasonal growing to supply fresh vegetables to his Auckland restaurants. For beginners, products with certified organic labeling help avoid greenwashing, and regular applications of organic seaweed can reduce plant stress.
