Britannica Kids defines an ocean as a huge body of salt water that covers nearly 71 percent of Earth’s surface and holds about 98 percent of the planet’s water. There is one connected world ocean divided into five main areas: the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean, and the Arctic Ocean. The Pacific is the largest and deepest, while the Arctic is the smallest and shallowest.
Ocean water is salty due to dissolved sodium chloride and is constantly in motion through currents, waves, and tides caused by wind and gravity. The ocean regulates Earth’s climate by absorbing heat and carbon dioxide, and phytoplankton produce at least 50 percent of the oxygen humans breathe. Smaller parts of oceans near land are called seas, which are often partly enclosed by land.
The ocean floor has different levels, from the shallow continental shelf along continents to deep flat plains called basins in the deepest parts. The deepest point is Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, about 10,994 meters below sea level. Oceans support diverse ecosystems from coral reefs in sunlit zones to unique organisms in the dark, high-pressure deep sea.
