About Noreaster
National Weather Service defines a nor’easter as a low-pressure storm along the East Coast with strong northeasterly winds off the Atlantic. It forms between Georgia and New Jersey and can bring heavy rain, gale-force winds, coastal flooding, and snow from September to April. The I-95 Corridor from Washington D.C. to Boston is especially vulnerable.
These extratropical storms develop when cold Arctic air meets warm Gulf Stream water, creating a counterclockwise system. While often linked to winter blizzards like the 1888 storm or 1993 “Superstorm,” nor’easters occur year-round and can rival hurricanes in size and impact.
FOX Weather reported a nor’easter threat for the Northeast in late September 2026, with gusts over 40 mph and coastal flooding expected from the Carolinas to New England.
