About Great Noreaster
The 1991 Perfect Storm is considered the most famous nor’easter, also called the “No-Name Storm” or “Halloween Gale.” It formed October 28–November 2, 1991, when a nor’easter absorbed Hurricane Grace and became a Category 1 hurricane. The storm killed 13 people and caused over $200 million in damage along the East Coast.
Sebastian Junger’s book and the 2000 film The Perfect Storm chronicled the sinking of the fishing boat Andrea Gail during the storm. Other notable nor’easters include the 1888 Great Blizzard and the 1978 Northeast Blizzard, which dropped over 27 inches of snow in Boston.
