A September nor’easter may form along the East Coast this week, with the most significant impacts expected Thursday, Sept. 24, into the weekend. The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center says an upper-level low could strengthen over the western Atlantic Friday, Sept. 25, and linger through the weekend, bringing gusty winds, rain, and coastal flooding from the Mid-Atlantic to New England.
The storm will develop as low pressure stalls offshore while high pressure sits over eastern Canada and New England, creating prolonged northeast winds. Coastal flooding risk is heightened by tidal cycles and a full moon on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Exact timing varies by location, with peak ocean overwash possible around high tides Thursday at 6:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., and Friday at 7 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. along the Outer Banks.
