About Ninasimone
Nina Simone was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist born Eunice Kathleen Waymon on February 21, 1933 in Tryon, North Carolina. She trained as a classical pianist and later performed jazz, blues, soul, folk and gospel, refusing to be boxed into one genre. Simone became known as "The High Priestess of Soul" and recorded over 40 albums between 1958 and 1974.
She also became a prominent civil rights activist in the 1960s, performing at demonstrations and writing songs like "Mississippi Goddam" and "Young, Gifted and Black". After facing racial barriers, she left the U.S. in the 1970s and later lived in Liberia, Switzerland, England, Barbados, and France. Nina Simone died in France on April 21, 2003 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
