About Modernart
MasterClass defines modern art as artworks created roughly between the 1860s and the 1970s, marking a break from traditional realism and narrative styles. It emerged in the late 19th century as artists like Pablo Picasso and Claude Monet began experimenting with form, color, and perspective instead of depicting the world exactly as it appeared. The movement reflected social changes from industrialization and new technologies like photography.
Modern art includes movements such as Impressionism, Cubism, Dadaism, and Abstract Expressionism, each challenging established conventions. Key characteristics are abstraction, personal expression, and the use of new materials like collage and found objects. While often confused with contemporary art, modern art is a historical category ending around the 1970s, whereas contemporary art refers to work made from the late 20th century onward.
Today the term is also used for decorative and commercial design inspired by modernist principles. Art.com’s NaxArt collection shows this with geometric abstract prints designed for modern living spaces. Similarly, artists on Instagram share textured relief paintings labeled as modern art for home decor.
