About Lostland
Lost lands refer to islands or continents believed to have existed in prehistory but disappeared due to geological events. The most well-known example is Atlantis, which is described as either a lost island or continent in myth and philosophy. Scientific discoveries have also confirmed real submerged landmasses like Zealandia and Greater Adria, found using plate tectonic simulation software.
The term also appears widely in fiction and media. In Valiant Comics, the Lost Land is a realm outside regular time where dinosaurs, robots, and aliens coexist, and it serves as the home of the adventurer Turok. The 1974 television series Land of the Lost depicts a pocket universe filled with dinosaurs, the Altrusian race, and the creature-like Sleestak.
In gaming, the Lost Lands were added to Ultima Online in 1998 as a new continental area with cities like Delucia and Papua, accessible through magic words such as recdu and recsu. The concept continues to appear in literature and poetry, including Eavan Boland’s poem The Lost Land, which uses it as a metaphor for memory and absence.
