About Livetheatre
The Living Theatre is the oldest experimental theatre group in the United States, founded in 1947 by Judith Malina and Julian Beck. Based in New York City, it pioneered off-off-Broadway with avant-garde works like The Connection and The Brig, blending politics with performance. After Beck’s death in 1985, Hanon Reznikov became co-director with Malina until her death in 2015.
The company has long used theater for social change and collaboration. In 2024, it held a residency at Trinity College’s Austin Arts Center in Hartford to create new community-focused work with local participants. The Living Theatre remains a landmark of American experimental performance.
