About Lining
A lining is a separate layer of fabric sewn inside a garment to create a smooth finish and hide seams and construction. It sits independently from the outer fabric and is usually attached at the neckline, waistband or facing. This helps clothes glide on easily, protects delicate outer fabrics, and gives a polished look without adding much structure.
Common lining fabrics include Bemberg cupro, silk charmeuse, and lightweight cottons like batiste or poplin. Bemberg is breathable, anti-static and often made from cotton waste, making it popular for jackets and skirts. Polyester linings are also widely used for durability and are available in many colors to match the outer garment.
Two popular sewing methods are the bagged lining and the facing technique. The bagged lining involves sewing the outer fabric and lining right sides together, then turning the garment right-side-out for no visible topstitching. The facing method sews the facing to the lining first, trims corners, and presses for a clean edge.
