About Kate Sessions Park San Diego
Kate Sessions Memorial Park is a 79-acre hilltop park in San Diego offering panoramic views of Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Located at 5115 Soledad Rd on Mount Soledad, it features hiking trails, a playground, sports fields, and picnic areas in a dog-friendly setting. The park is open daily from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM and is known for its calm atmosphere and sunset vistas.
The park honors Kate Sessions, the American botanist and horticulturist called the “Mother of Balboa Park.” In 1892 she leased land in City Park and agreed to plant 100 trees a year, transforming the barren mesa into a 1,200-acre green space. She introduced hundreds of plant species to Southern California, including jacarandas and eucalyptus, shaping much of Balboa Park’s landscape.
A bronze statue of Sessions by artist Anna Hyatt Huntington stands near Laurel Street Bridge in Balboa Park, unveiled in 1939 as the city’s only full sculpture of a real woman. The San Diego Public Library also highlights her legacy through its Summer Reading Program and the children’s book The Tree Lady.
