About Jim Henson And Kermit The Frog
Kermit the Frog was created by Jim Henson in 1955 for the local TV show Sam and Friends, originally as a lizard-like character made from his mother’s spring coat and ping pong balls. Henson performed Kermit’s voice until his death in 1990, establishing the frog as the calm host of The Muppet Show and a regular on Sesame Street. The puppet evolved into a recognizable green frog by the late 1960s and became the mascot of The Jim Henson Company before being acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 2004.
Kermit’s name is often linked to Henson’s childhood friend Theodore Kermit Scott, but the Jim Henson Company archivist has said the similarity was coincidental and that Henson simply liked how “Kermit” sounded for the character. Kermit first appeared as a frog in the 1968 TV special Hey Cinderella! and gained flippers and a pointed collar for The Frog Prince special, cementing the design fans recognize today.
Henson’s approach treated puppets as actors with real emotion, which helped Kermit become a cultural icon beyond children’s TV. The character sang “Rainbow Connection” in The Muppet Movie and “Bein’ Green” on Sesame Street, both earning lasting recognition in American pop culture. Kermit’s legacy is now preserved at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, where the original 1955 puppet is displayed.
